Chapter Eight

“She’s mine. My mate.”

The words broke through the foggy darkness as Daisy-Dawn tried to rouse herself. Fainting wasn’t something she did often, but when she did… well, she hoped she hadn’t hit the ground too hard.

She’s mine. My mate.

West’s low, rumbled admission sent her heart soaring. Mine? Mate? Both very encouraging for a girl who’d been pining after a boy for so long.

Her head ached, so maybe she wasn’t hearing him right. Maybe the she he spoke of was someone else. Or maybe mate meant friend, and not what she hoped it did.

While she was at it, maybe he wasn’t a bear-man at all. Maybe she’d been hallucinating in her panicked state and she was at the bottom of the hill covered in mud.

This could all be some fever dream she was living as she waited for death to take her.

But then other voices filtered into the darkness. And other words. They were like puzzle pieces she had to sort and test until they were in the right place so the sentence made sense.

As if anything could ever make sense again.

“I need time alone with her,” West said. That was also encouraging. So far so good.

If she could open her eyes, maybe she could get a sense of where she was—and whether or not she was hallucinating voices.

Bottom of muddy hill? Or somewhere safe?

She took comfort in the fact that she wasn’t being eaten by a grizzly…

Because it turned into a man, her subconscious reminded.

Yeah, that was something to consider.

If she wasn’t dying.

If she was, well then… none of this mattered.

There was some talk of a broken door. The voice of another man and a woman. But she was only listening for West. His was the voice that mattered.

“Nobody can know about her. I have to keep this under wraps. No one will think to look for us here.”

Screeeeech. Hard stop.

What did he just say?

Nobody can know about her?

If there was a manual called Words Women Never Want To Hear, those would be the title of the first chapter. Damn.

Again, she tried to open her eyes but the effort just sent her farther into the darkness, the rest of his words fading to silence.

When she came awake, it was to the sound of floorboards creaking and the spitting crackle of a nearby fire.

So, not at the bottom of a muddy hill. Good to know.

She wasn’t sure what she expected to find when she opened her eyes, but West pacing in front of her wearing only a towel around his waist and a coating of dried mud… wasn’t it.

She lifted her head to get her bearings and he froze midstep.

“You’re awake.” He breathed a relieved sigh and she didn’t miss the way his hunched shoulders relaxed.

Was he worried about her? Or… just concerned about keeping her hidden? Nobody can know about her.

Yeah, those overheard words were still hitting sharp. But it was an issue for later.

Sitting forward, she looked around. They were in a small cabin. The kind that was basically one large room and could be easily heated with a wood stove.
